Frequently Asked Questions

Helpful information about beginning counseling at BodyUp Counseling.

1. What concerns do you help clients with?

We work with adults and adolescents experiencing anxiety, depression, trauma, grief and loss, chronic pain, relationship difficulties, burnout, career uncertainty, and major life transitions. Because each clinician has different areas of experience, we will help connect you with the therapist whose background and approach best fit your needs.

2. How do I know which therapist is right for me?

The therapeutic relationship is an important part of effective counseling. When you contact us, we will ask a few questions about what you are looking for, your availability, and any preferences you may have. We will then recommend a clinician who may be a good fit. You are also welcome to schedule a consultation before deciding.

3. What happens during the first counseling session?

The first session gives you and your therapist time to discuss what brought you to counseling, what has been affecting you, and what you hope to change. Your therapist will ask about relevant history, answer questions, and begin developing a treatment plan with you. You do not have to share everything at once, and therapy will move at a pace that feels manageable.

4. Do you offer in-person and virtual counseling?

Yes. We offer in-person appointments as well as secure telehealth sessions for clients located in Illinois. Availability varies by clinician, so we will help you find an appointment format and schedule that work for you.

5. Do you accept insurance, and what will counseling cost?

BodyUp Counseling accepts Aetna, UnitedHealthcare, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois, Medicare, Cigna, and Humana. Coverage and out-of-pocket costs vary based on your specific plan, deductible, copay, coinsurance, and the clinician you see.

The self-pay rate is $150 per session. Sessions canceled with less than 24 hours’ notice, as well as missed appointments, are subject to a $100 fee. This fee is not billed to insurance.

Before your first appointment, we can help verify your benefits and provide an estimate of your expected cost. Because insurance verification is not a guarantee of payment, we also recommend confirming your outpatient behavioral-health benefits directly with your insurer.

6. What if I am unsure whether I am ready for therapy?

You do not need to have everything figured out before reaching out. Many people begin counseling because they feel stuck, overwhelmed, disconnected, or unsure what needs to change. A consultation can help you ask questions, understand your options, and decide whether counseling feels like the right next step.
